The arrival of large numbers of Syrian refugees in Europe finally brought the global refugee crisis to the attention of the Western public. And yet the global scale of these refugee flows and the inequalities in international burden-sharing in the hosting of refugees tend to go unnoticed. The same applies to the underlying causes, with indications that the Global North bears at least some measure of responsibility here. This is the starting point for the sef: projects, which also address another unresolved challenge – the often-neglected distinction between migration and displacement – and support efforts to build a fair global migration regime.
