Professor Franz Nuscheler is a leading German expert on development and peace policy. In recent years, he has increasingly explored the opportunities for shaping our globalised world on the basis of cooperation and participation – the keyword being »Global Governance«. In this Festschrift, his colleagues and associates pay tribute to his lifetime's work and commitment with a selection of personal contributions and academic papers. The authors focus critically on current global trends and examine their implications for the attainment of Global Governance and for sustainable development, peaceful conflict resolution, and intercultural dialogue.

In the Festschrift, friends, colleagues and associates from the academic community, politics and civil society honour Franz Nuscheler, Director of the Institute for Peace and Development (INEF) at the University of Duisburg-Essen, on the occasion of his retirement. For all of then Franz Nuscheler is a special and distinctive personality with regard to his academic qualities, his passionate commitment and his popularity as a teacher. This personal appreciation is particulery reflected in the first chapter of the Festschrift – “Personal and Academic Reflections on Franz Nuscheler”.

The articles in the second, third and fourth chapters offer a cross-section of the impressive range of issues of interest to Franz Nuscheler during his academic career: from Global Governance to development and peace, human rights, and intercultural dialogue. The authors explore relevant future-oriented debates currently under way in the academic and political arenas and attempt – with specific reference to Nuscheler's work – to draw new policy conclusions.
