In light of the current migration flows, the EU has called a summit on migration in Valletta, Malta from 11th-12th November 2015. African representatives have been invited to participate in this meeting. Whatever decisions are taken in Valletta, however, from an African perspective, European migration policy is not more of an imperative than African migration.

In the current Global Governance Spotlight, Dr Mehari Taddele Maru outlines the current crisis related to migration in Africa and identifies a number of discrepancies in the implementation of African migration governance. He further describes how the Valletta Summit can transform the migration crisis into an opportunity and makes recommendations as to how the Summit might contribute to effective migration governance and boost the EU-Africa Partnership’s trade and development agenda.
