The European Green Deal aims to make Europe climate-neutral by 2050. To achieve this ambitious goal, a fast transition to green, renewable energy is key, as energy use causes about three quarters of European emissions.
Just across the Mediterranean Sea, Africa holds enormous potential for renewable energy production, boasting the world’s best conditions for solar, wind, and hydrogen. At the same time, the continent could benefit from European investment in its energy sector.
Africa and Europe thus share the goal of making their energy production climate-neutral. A strong sustainable energy partnership between them could be a win-win situation. But how can a "just transition" between Africa and Europe be achieved in practice? And how can the necessary mutual trust be established? We are looking forward to discussing these questions with international experts at the Policy Lunch 2024.
